Ingredients We Don't Use

What you won't find in Pure Lochside products

Our very ethos is based upon the power of nature. So we never interfere with our natural ingredients or add chemical preservatives, colouring or fragrances. You will not find parabens, sulfates, mineral oil, petrochemicals or silicones in any of our products. The same applies to PEGS, TEA, DEA, phthalates or anything else other than plants or naturally occurring elements.

PARABENS

Parabens are a group of preservatives found in most skin care products. Look at the ingredients list in your bathroom and you will probably see ethylparaben, methylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, or benzylparaben. These chemicals will never be used in Pure Lochside products.

As well as being added to skin care products parabens are also commonly found in:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Shower gel
  • Bath Foam
  • Deodorant
  • Toothpaste
  • Moisturiser
  • Body Cream
  • Make-up
  • Food

Parabens have been linked to cancer (see extract below) and although they may not cause cancer, the fact that they were found in the tumours examined raises doubt in peoples minds.

Dr Philippa Darbre and colleagues at the University of Reading carried out tests on samples of 20 different human breast tumours. Dr Darbre said there may be reason for people to be concerned about the findings.

"Their detection in human breast tumours is of concern since parabens have been shown to be able to mimic the action of the female hormone oestrogen," she said.

"Oestrogen can drive the growth of human breast tumours. It would therefore seem especially prudent to consider whether parabens should continue to be used in such a wide range of cosmetics applied to the breast area including deodorants."

SULFATES

Sulfates such as Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are foaming and de-greasing agents found in many skin care products.

They are also found in other products such as:

  • Shampoo
  • Shower Gel/Body Wash
  • Cleansers/face washes
  • Shaving Foam
  • Hand Wash
  • Bath Foam/Bubble Bath
  • Toothpaste
  • Floor Cleaners
  • Car Shampoo
  • Engine De-greasers

Sulfates have been linked to irritated skin conditions which is why we don’t use them in Pure Lochside products. We prefer not to strip the skin of it’s natural protective barrier and we use pure plant oils rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids. The Organic Orange Cleansing Oil helps to dissolve any oil in the skin leaving a soft, smooth complexion. Skin should feel soft after cleansing rather than stripped and dry. This is why our Organic Orange Cleansing Oil is our bestselling product.

We would rather avoid using these synthetic chemicals in Pure Lochside organic skin care products.

MINERAL OIL/PETROCHEMICLAS

Listed on skin care ingredients as:  Petroleum jelly, petrolatum, soft paraffin, Liquidum paraffinum, Paraffin oil, Paraffin wax.

NB – Mineral oil should not be confused with oils rich in minerals (i.e. zinc) – mineral oil is a common term for ingredients such as Petroleum jelly which are not nutritious oils such as the ones we use in Pure Lochside products.

Mineral oil tends to sit on the surface of the skin so it doesn’t let moisture out but it doesn’t let anything in and the skin cannot “breathe”. Skin needs plant oils to keep it supple and glowing, and the oils we use are rich in vitamins and natural minerals such as zinc and magnesium plus Omega 3, 6, 7 and 9 (essential for healthy skin and hair).

Mineral oil is said to block the pores so is not advisable for oily skin types and dry skin types needs extra nourishing oils so we would not recommend the use of mineral oil.

We would rather avoid using these synthetic chemicals in Pure Lochside organic skin care products.

SILICONES

Silicones are used in many shampoos, conditioners and hair products such as de-frizzing serums and hair gels. They coat the hair but it is said to cause build up and weigh the hair down.

They are also used in skin care products such as primers (make-up primers) and serums. They coat the skin and make it feel very smooth but form a barrier and have no nutritional value. Silicones are also use in breast implants.

We would rather avoid using these synthetic chemicals in Pure Lochside organic skin care products.

PHTHALATES

Phthalates are substances added to plastic. They have been used in skin care products and are linked to numerous studies which show heath concerns, birth defects plus potential autism concerns. New skin care products coming onto the market in the UK are not permitted to use Phthalates but they are still found in some skin care products plus other items including adult toys, vinyl flooring and other plastic items. Pure Lochside organic skin care products never have and never will contain any Phthalates.

We would rather avoid using these synthetic chemicals in Pure Lochside organic skin care products.

TEA

TEA (Triethanolamine) is a clear liquid that helps to bind ingredients together.

TEA is considered safe to use in skin care products that come in contact with skin for a short time and are then rinsed off.

The danger with triethanolamine comes if it is mixed with other ingredients containing N-nitrosating agents or water to form carcinogenic (cancer causing) chemicals called nitrosamines.

TEA is said to be a mild skin and eye irritant.

We would rather avoid using these synthetic chemicals in Pure Lochside organic skin care products.

DEA

DEA (diethanolamine) is used in shampoos, lotions, creams and other skin care products as a wetting agent. DEA gives a rich lather in shampoos and helps bind lotions and creams. DEA is not particularly harmful ingredient but it can react with other ingredients in skin care products to form a carcinogen called nitrosodiethanolamine (NDEA). NDEA is absorbed through the skin and has been linked to cancers of the stomach, oesophagus, liver and bladder.

We would rather avoid using these synthetic chemicals in Pure Lochside organic skin care products.

PEG’S

PEG’s (Polyethylen Glycols) are synthetic ingredients. PEGs are said to have the potential to be contaminated by 1,4-dioxane, a cancer-causing agent, as well as heavy metals.

We would rather avoid using these synthetic chemicals in Pure Lochside organic skin care products.

PHENOXYETHANOL

Phenoxyethanol is a preservative which is mainly used in cosmetics and medications. It can depress the Central Nervous System and can cause vomiting and diorrhoea.

We would rather avoid using these synthetic chemicals in Pure Lochside organic skin care products.
